Field trip to Umm Al Quwain, U.A.E.

Last weekend I took my students to Umm Al Quwain, U.A.E. for a field study with EcoVentures.  we looked at the impact of mangrove forests on coastal environments.

We stayed at a really nice marine club that had a big pool, restaurant, volleyball court, a beach, small villas and dorms.

The group of us visited several coastal areas including a beach with human made erosional defences (groynes), a new mangrove forest, an old growth mangrove forest and an area where the mangroves had been already cut down.  The authorities in the U.A.E. now recognize the significance of the mangroves and have introduced legislation and protection measures to ensure their survival over time.

All in all, a great experience was shared because not only did we undertake important studies, but I was able to bring along with me some camp tricks that kept the crowd entertained!

My boys!  great kids.

The whole crew at sunset.

Off in the distance, a big ol' palace.  One of three owned by the local Sheik.
